Putting myself out there – and you can too!
It's something I wanted to do for years, yet grappled with this self-doubt that I'm not worthy, that what I've got to say isn't going to interest people. Who do I think I am anyway?!
Finally, I thought 'stuff it'. I do have something to say and I've earned the right to say it! If not now, when?!
So I applied to present at a conference for the first time. 🎤
Speaking and presenting is not in my usual bag of tricks. I’m an introvert and a bit awkward (and proud of it!). Despite this, I really wanted to share my experience with imposter syndrome and managing stress because it's rife in the bid and proposal industry and I feel strongly that if we talk about it, it will eventually shrink and vaporise.
Standing up there, sharing my story with a room full of professionals, was both terrifying and exhilarating.
Surprise - I loved it!
Here’s what I’ve learned from the experience:
It’s never too late: Age be damned. If you have a dream or a goal, go for it. It’s never too late to try something new.
Believe in yourself: We often underestimate our abilities. Trust me, you’re more capable than you think.
Step out of your comfort zone: Yes, it’s scary. But the growth and satisfaction that come from pushing your boundaries are worth it.
Preparation is key: Thorough preparation can boost your confidence significantly. Knowing your material inside and out helps calm the nerves.
You don’t have to be a natural speaker: Just because public speaking doesn’t come naturally to you (or you don’t think it does), it shouldn’t stop you from sharing your message. Your voice matters!
Thank you to the APMP ANZ Chapter conference organisers for their hard work and dedication. The event was fantastic, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to be a part of it.
Thank you to my friends and colleagues who cheered me on.
If you're holding back on doing something due to fear or doubt, take this as a sign to go for it. Believe in yourself and see what you can achieve - you will be surprised. 💫
